May 2017 is the first year that the new maths 9-1 GCSE will be examined. A common question I have been asked by students and parents is ‘where can I find past papers to practice?’ and ‘what will the grade boundaries be?’ The aim of this post is to examine the syllabus and answer both questions. The papers Currently there is a limited set of papers available for the new maths 9-1 GCSE. Just click on the appropriate link below to find a pdf of the exam you would like to complete. Edexcel:                 OCR                              AQA S1 S2 S3                  S1 S2 S3 S4                Papers,  Answers The Tiers Grade 9 is now the highest that you can achieve, grade 8 the next highest and so on. The higher tier runs from grade 9-4, and the foundation tier runs from grade 5-1. It is important for your child to know if they are taking the higher or foundation tier paper as the content is different for both. They can ask their school teacher which tier they are entered for if they don’t know already. Since there are no past papers for this exam, I am advising all my students to complete all the sample paper sets for each of the exam boards to help prepare. The mathematical content in each exam board is broadly the same as are the style of questions despite small differences. It’s all maths! There are 3 exams in each sample set; 2 calculator and 1 non-calculator. This is the same structure that your child’s Maths GCSE will be. It is so important to focus on these sample papers instead of the past papers for the old GCSE because there is new content in the 2017 GCSE that is not in the old papers. The style of questions is also very different. Instead of practicing from past papers, I would advice a combination of the sample papers (linked above), and the 9-1 GCSE Edexcel textbook which can be found with a simple google or amazon search. Many schools have not adopted this book yet and I cannot attest enough to the usefulness of a book rammed with questions of the new style for every single topic and answers at the back. In my opinion it is best used in combination with a tutor / teacher / knowledgeable parent and a revision guide that has clear explanations and is specific to your exam board (CGP for example). Grade boundaries What percentage do you need to achieve a grade 9 in maths GCSE? How about a grade 5? These questions are difficult to answer and school teachers giving vague non-committal answers to this question are doing so because we can only really guess at this point. No one knows exactly what the grade boundaries are - it will depend on how difficult the papers are that are given in the summer. Having said this, we do have some clues from the government as to how many students will receive each grade, which means anyone can predict what grade they are currently working at and what grade they are likely to achieve on the 9 to 1 scale. Using past papers, we can calculate what grade you are currently at. To predict accurately what grade your child is currently at, they can complete 3 past papers from their exam board and work out their grade from the grade boundaries for that paper. You can find grade boundaries for the specific papers you have completed on the exam board website. Once you have the grades for those 3 papers, you can match them to the number grade by using the image above. Bear in mind that if your child gets a C, that will equate to a high 4 or a low 5. A high C will be a grade 5, and a low C will be a grade 4 (the bottom 66% to be exact according to ofqual and Edexcel board). So most students achieving a C on the old paper will achieve a grade 4 on the new paper. While teaching abroad can be thrilling, it can also be incredibly challenging in a number of ways. What you need to know about in-person interview sessions It may come as a surprise, but not all international schools hire off of a Skype interview. Some schools are very particular about meeting teachers in-person before making a job offer. Throughout the year, our partners will hold interview sessions in major cities across the world to find the top talent for their schools. Teach Away’s Placement Coordinator Sam Nicholson gives us an inside look at how this hiring process works! Where do interview sessions normally take place? Sam: In-person interview locations vary, but in our experience, they are primarily focused in the UK and US and sometimes India. In the UK, it’s almost always London or Manchester and, depending on the program, Dublin. In the US, it’s primarily New York and Houston. Some other cities that schools have had interviews include Atlanta, Chicago, San Francisco and Toronto (Canada). In India, sessions will typically take place in New Delhi and Mumbai. How do I score an invite to an interview session? Sam: There are two ways to get invited to an in-person interview. The first is to apply directly yourself to whatever school you’re interested in. The second is to go through Teach Away: our team will complete a pre-screen with you and submit your application to the institution. As we try and curate high-quality candidates, the school would likely be more willing to approve you for an in-person interview if you went with Teach Away first. Who will be interviewing me? Sam: The interviews are usually conducted by representatives from the school in a panel format with about 4-5 representatives who are very experienced in recruiting international teachers. Sam: This varies depending on how many vacancies the school has and how well the interview itself went. We have had many candidates placed in international schools through Teach Away, and the hard part is getting approved for an interview in the first place, so if all went well at your actual interview there is a solid chance the school will be interested in hiring you! How should I prepare for the interview? Sam: The best way to prepare would be to brush up on your subject knowledge if your in-person interview requires a test (which you will be informed of in advance) as well as preparing a lesson plan that highlights one of the more successful lessons you’ve taught. You are usually required to demonstrate a short snippet of the lesson and then explain the entire plan and why you think it’s a good lesson. How long does it take to hear back after an interview? Sam: Usually after completion of your interview it takes 2-4 weeks to hear back. The school will send us a list of recommended candidates who will likely be getting offers and we reach out to let you know if you were approved or denied. At that point, if everything is in order, you will be sent an official offer and then the process of collecting documents for your visa begins.

Students who would like to become global citizens can mimic the study abroad experience to some degree without actually spending a semester in another country. Here are four tips from a private Irvine college consultant to get a study abroad experience at home. 1. Join an international club or society Students who are new to college can join the International Students Club or other multicultural society on campus. One of the greatest things about visiting another country is meeting the local people. Although it is good to learn about new people in their home environment, students who join an international club will get to meet new friends and classmates from all over the world. Visit an urban area near campus Although many students do not have the opportunity to travel abroad, they will likely have the opportunity to travel to a major city within the US. This is one of the reasons why living in the melting pot of the US is so advantageous. 3. Study art or art history Students who take a class in art or art history will learn about artistic and cultural expression from all over the globe. Students can generally choose from Western art or Eastern art and will have the opportunity to view the history of other cultures through the eyes of their artists and musicians. Choose a university that boasts an international student community Many major public universities will make a huge effort to have a diverse and international student population living and studying on campus. US-based students who would like to have a multicultural experience, but who are not able to study in another country, are advised to do research about the percentage of international students on campus at the colleges they are intending to apply. In short Although the study abroad experience isnt for everybody, (it’s a big step and is also quite expensive) there are several ways that students can stay at home in the US but still begin to become global citizens. Learning about different cultures, backgrounds, and languages is a great first step to becoming a well-rounded and educated adult. It is also a wonderful way to learn to communicate effectively and enjoy the company of different types of people once in the work place.
